Comfort-Zone Exit Planner

Pick something you've been meaning to try. We'll break it into four small steps, none of which require you to "just do it".

Examples for social:

Your 4-step first move

Edit any step. The plan auto-saves to your browser.

1
The 10% version
2
A support person
3
Lowest-stakes day
4
The first sentence / action
If even the 10% version feels too big, halve it. Then halve it again. The point isn't the destination; it's breaking the freeze.

What this actually does

"Just do it" doesn't work for most anxious people, because the gap between doing-nothing and doing-the-thing is enormous and they're being asked to jump it. This tool makes the gap smaller and gives you four small named decisions to work through, instead of one large vague one.

The structure is loosely based on behavioural activation (Martell, Jacobson, Lewinsohn) and on "tiny habits" (Fogg). It is not exposure therapy. It is a way of getting started so exposure can begin.

Who it's for

People who have a clear "thing I want to do" but cannot move on it. Most useful for social, creative, and physical categories — things that require showing up.

Less useful if the thing is genuinely impossible right now (you don't have the time/money/health for it), or if the avoidance is more about intrusive thoughts than action.

Limitations

A plan is not the doing. Many people make beautiful plans and never start. This tool's only check against that is to make the 10% version embarrassingly small. If you find yourself rewriting to make it bigger, you are rewriting for procrastination, not planning.

If your "thing" includes other people, please don't do it without their consent.

FAQ

What's the "10% version"?

A smaller version that costs roughly 10% of the effort. "Go to the open mic" → "Watch from the back without signing up". "Apply for the job" → "Read one job description end to end". The point is movement, not completeness.

Why a support person?

Solo attempts at anxiety-provoking things are harder than accompanied ones. Even a text message before and after changes the success rate. If you have no-one, name that too — the plan still works without it.

Where does my plan go?

localStorage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I save multiple plans?

Not yet — this version holds one plan at a time. Use Print/PDF to keep an archive, or open the page again later and overwrite.

What are the common mistakes when using Comfort-Zone Exit Planner? Most common mistakes come down to four habits: entering 20 when the field expects 0.2 because the field is a percentage; leaving a field blank and accepting the default without checking what it stands for; changing one input and reading a result that was calculated before the change; and quoting the output as an exact figure when the page describes it as a reference estimate. Press calculate again after any edit, and treat the number as a reference point rather than a final answer.
